Aisling is a Dublin based editorial stylist whose work appears in many glossy
magazines on a regular basis, she also consults on individual fashion driven
projects. In September 2007 she launched The Loft Market at The Powerscourt
Town Centre; a new artistic space showcasing the work of a select range of
Ireland’s up-and-coming fashion and accessory designers, artists and
photographers. Since it’s inception it has been home to the work of over fifty
creative individuals. The Loft Market is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays
and hosts a range of events throughout the year.
How did you break into the styling industry?
How did you break into the styling industry?
I became interested in styling after taking up an opportunity to work on a ‘test’
fashion shoot with a photographer. It was a completely new experience for me
and I guess I was hooked very quickly. For my first shoot I borrowed clothes from a costume designer I know and some shops around town, where maybe I had
friends working…. And included things from my own wardrobe%21
I assisted Graham Cruz on a shoot and a couple of shows and he showed me
the procedures for dealing with shops and I got a crash course in how shows
were run.
I built up a small portfolio by doing test shoots with new models from Dublin
agencies Morgan and 1
st
Option.
I was very eager to work and brought my book into Irish Tatler magazine. They
really liked what I had done so far and commissioned me to do two shoots for
their next issue. This was extremely fortunate and perhaps a little
unprecedented, but it was the beginning of a great relationship and I continued to
work with Irish Tatler for almost two years shooting fashion editorials for them
every month.
The exposure of being published on a regular basis in a national publication
opened me up to the Irish fashion industry. People would see my shoots and
contact me for other work. I have never been associated with an agency, so
working freelance is how I’ve managed to build a business reputation
independently. Dublin is a small city and if you do good work you will receive that
credit.
After working in Ireland with the majority of publications, PR companies and
agencies involved in fashion, I began dealing with agencies and photographers in
London, Milan and New York. This then opened up new opportunities for working
internationally.
