AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel later said that less than 1 percent of AT&T customers were affected, but no accounts were breached during the investigation
AT&T has released an email to all of its customers describing a hack attempt to obtain online account information, which it said was unsuccessful.
According to AT&T, hackers tried to gain access to AT&T customer accounts online via auto script technology. They tried to see if AT&T telephone numbers were somehow connected to online AT&T accounts.
"We recently detected an organized and systematic attempt to obtain information on a number of AT&T customer accounts, including yours," said the email from AT&T to its customers. "We do not believe that the perpetrators of this attack obtained access to your online account or any of the information contained in that account."
AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel later said that less than 1 percent of AT&T customers were affected, but no accounts were breached during the investigation. AT&T had about 100 million subscribers at the end of Q3 2011.
AT&T currently does not know who was behind the hack attempt, but an investigation is ongoing.
Earlier in the day yesterday, a wireless data outage occurred for AT&T customers in the northeastern U.S. AT&T says this was not linked to the attempted hack, and neither was last year's attack against AT&T Apple iPad users, where user email addresses were collected.
According to AT&T, the hack was thwarted due to its "focus on security and swift action."
