The colonization and the respective strategy had always been to have a negative impact on the minds of the people across the world. Whenever the word is heard or uttered it takes us to the continent of Africa and the brutalities of which they were the largest victims. But the colonization had its good impacts too by providing some new ideas to the natives which might have lead them to further development. It is a false belief that the colonizers are far more polished and developed than the natives or it is the other way round that the colonizers makes the natives believe so, since the very act of colonization is considered to be a barbarian act as such. On the other hand the colonizers to a great part helped the natives to get good education and a surface level know-how about the nations and development outside. They might be one of the major links between different nations across the world and has influenced many native cultures and each and every occupational field even.
This is far more evident by taking the architectural filed into consideration as many historical buildings which have now become a part of a city’s honor and dignity might have been gifted by the colonizers as such. One of the Seven Wonders of the World the Taj Mahal, believed to be the living exemplar of love, located at the city of Agra, is really gift of the Mughals to India. The Mughal architecture has then influenced the architectural field of India as a whole and many new builders are also maintaining the same style with many deviations as such, but the base remains as a standstill. This has also influenced the architectural style involved in the building of homes too.
When we take the city of Washington DC into consideration we may find the influence of the colonizers in the architecture too. The Europeans were the first to visit the land and hence we could see a lot of European influence in the architecture, especially the Italian, Neoclassic, and Gothic styles to the maximum. The historical buildings which the city holds close to the heart are mostly influenced by these mentioned architectures, even the White House in particular as such. Thus for the new home builders Washington DC just like any other city of the world has already set the foundation, and the builders are only demanded of following the same with some creative modes to generate some new designs as such. Thus apart from being completely negative, colonization has some merits too though submerged at the interiors. |
